304 stainless steel is an austenitic stainless steel, mainly composed of chromium (Cr) and nickel (Ni), which play a vital role in 304 stainless steel.
Chromium is the most abundant element in 304 stainless steel,about 18%. Chromium reacts with oxygen in the air to form a thin and tough chromium oxide film (passivation film) on the surface, which prevents further oxidation and can self-repair, thus significantly improving the corrosion resistance. The presence of chromium enables 304 stainless steel to resist corrosion in neutral to weakly oxidizing environments, such as dilute sulfuric acid, acetic acid and other media.
Nickel is an austenite-forming element that can change the crystal structure of steel from ferrite to austenite. This structure gives 304 stainless steel good plasticity, weldability and toughness. The addition of nickel significantly improves the corrosion resistance of 304 stainless steel to non-oxidizing acids and chloride solutions, especially in neutral to weakly reducing environments.
