430 resists rust in moderate atmospheric, freshwater, and mild acid conditions. It can surface stain (tea-staining) in high-humidity or salt-laden environments, which is typically cosmetic and removable. It will corrode in chloride-rich environments (seawater, swimming pools) — use 316 grade in those situations. Proper passivation and maintenance dramatically extend service life.
Yes, 430 is weldable without preheating. Post-weld annealing at 750–800°C is recommended to restore corrosion resistance and ductility in the heat-affected zone. ER430 filler metal is standard; ER309L is preferred for dissimilar metal welds. It is easier to weld than martensitic grades like 410 or 420.
