Stainless Steel Grade 321 SS alloy

Stainless Steel Grade 321 SS alloy

  • Titanium element
  • Resistance to intergranular corrosion
  • High-temperature strength
  • Erosion-corrosion resistance

Type 321 stainless steel plate outperforms Type 304 stainless steel plate in terms of high-temperature stress-rupture and creep resistance.

Product Description

Stainless Steel Grade 321 SS alloy is a Ni-Cr-Mo type austenitic stainless steel plate. Because of the addition of titanium, its grain boundary corrosion resistance and high temperature strength are better. Titanium can also effectively control the formation of chromium carbide!

The stabilizing effect of titanium gives 321 stainless steel significant advantages at temperatures below 650°C:

  • Titanium carbide forms in preference to chromium carbide, preserving the chromium concentration within the matrix.
  • The density of the oxide layer is enhanced, slowing the rate of high-temperature oxidation.
  • The continuous service temperature is approximately 150°C higher than that of 304 stainless steel.

Aero-engine combustion chamber liners represent a classic application for 321 stainless steel:

  • Withstands transient high temperatures of 800–1000°C from the gas flow
  • Coefficient of thermal expansion is close to that of nickel-based alloys, facilitating the joining of dissimilar materials
  • Titanium stabilization properties accommodate thermal cycling associated with repeated start-stop operations

What key factors would overturn your decision?

Caution with sulfur-containing media

Stainless Steel Sheet 321 Titanium stabilization in sulfur-containing media may accelerate pitting corrosion. Regular sheet materials require additional treatment to meet the requirements.

After purchasing the Stainless Steel Grade 321 SS alloy, you might have underestimated these supporting equipment.

For instance, when working in a high-temperature environment, ordinary gloves are unable to offer adequate protection, while professional heat-resistant protective gloves can effectively prevent the risk of burns.

How to choose 321 material that is not stainless steel so as to avoid the pitfalls in high-temperature applications?

  • Below 300℃: 304 stainless steel channel steel offers greater cost advantage
  • 300 – 600℃: Use 321 stainless steel profiles
  • Above 600℃: Upgrade to 310S stainless steel

What is the chemical composition of 321 stainless steel?

  • (C)≤0.08%、
  • (Si)≤1.00%、
  • (Mn)≤2.00%、
  • (P)≤0.045%、
  • (S)≤0.030%、
